In several languages, 'nova' has the meaning of 'new', which is one of the reasons this endeavor was named Novaballet. We are committed to showcasing a wide range of distinctive works by choreographers with unique visions. All of the artists involved with Novaballet believe in the transformational powers of this medium. We have dedicated our lives to this medium because we have the conviction that cultural events and associated activities are an ideal way for people from diverse backgrounds to establish closer relationships. Through these relationships, a mutual sense of community ownership and responsibility is created, thereby strengthening our communities.
The world of dance is vast and varied. It has the ability to speak to every person in every life situation. In order to communicate this breadth of experience, we must constantly challenge ourselves with a broad range of artistic vocabulary. We do this in two ways: acquiring and presenting the works of noted choreographers, and commissioning new works which will be premiered by Novaballet. Please consider supporting the following two initiatives . . .
The New Works Fund
In order for art to be part of the fabric of our community, it must be made relevant for today's realities. Art is a product of environment. The physical place and the time in history where it is developed are intrinsic to its meaning. By developing new works, we contribute to the narrative that defines a community, and export it to the entire world.
The New Masters Fund
Worldwide, fresh and innovative choreography is developed which engages audiences and pushes the development of the art form. Only through live performance can these works inspire and enlighten ourselves, our families, and our communities. Showcasing an array of new works by choreographers with distinctive visions illustrates the breadth and depth of ballet while providing our dancers, wardrobe personnel and production teams with a broad base of experience.
Novaballet also supports the Osborn Ballet Program, an after-school program offering professionally oriented ballet classes for boys and girls. The scope of the program also includes reading projects, field trips and visits from guest professionals. This inner-city program directly engages students who would otherwise not be exposed to this art form with the discipline and physical benefits of ballet. Currently, 95 4th through 8th graders participate in this year-long program.
